Japanese Nuclear Disaster

Tamara City, Japan, 7 April 2011 – A Greenpeace radiation monitoring team member tests food crops for contamination as Tatsuko Okawara looks on. Okawara-san has been an organic farmer near Tamara City, 40km from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, for 30 years. She says that she is afraid for her children’s future, and feels ashamed that she didnt take action against the nuclear power station before it was too late. She no longer knows if she can continue as a farmer, as the soil in the area may be contaminated. Greenpeace is working in the area to monitor radioactive contamination of food and soil to estimate the health and safety risks for the local population.
